Rather than have a political discussion on the shoutbox, and it's a difficult place to have a discussion regarding replying to a view/point a poster has made, I thought it would be better to have a dedicated politics thread; so, here we are, please feel free to use.

Two ways of looking at that Bill. If he goes then there is one less megalomaniac ruling the earth although a Democratic House tends keeps a lid on many of his excesses. The economic recovery of the globe would probably be best served with Trump in the White House. Also on the positive side he is an Anglophile which is likely to prove useful in the coming years and militarily I am confident he would be a reactive partner. The alternative is Biden, plastic surgery cannot cover the fact that he is probably one short hop from a retirement complex, bloody hell, he's two years older than me and I think I know what 77 is likely to feel like. Biden is also, as Obama, an EU fan and possibly anti-British, so selfishly not too promising for our future. A rock and a hard place springs to mind but whatever our American friends decide then we'll have to make the best of it.

Think there's a politics thread now!! Why not use it? Quite right Steve; we have a thread on politics so might as well use it. In my defence Steve, I was responding to a post by Wimbo which could have gone in either thread. Yes mine was political but it was in answer to a political point made by Bill, the US election. I did warn of the dangers of politics infecting this message board and clappers also mentioned religion as not being a good idea. My position is that if a political point is made that I either agree or disagree with I will most likely comment. My opinions are as valid as anybody else but out of choice would prefer to see them elsewhere or as responses to comment sections on on-line news media.

That's good Liz you and others have now got a platform for political views. The Covid-19 thread can now be used for news on research, how people are coping with lockdown etc without partisan political views being aired.

I have family living and working in the U.S.A....They have told me that Trump is the main reason for getting Americans back to work, reviving their country, and bringing our two countries together, he believes in a strong independent U.K...His first act was to get Winston Churchill's bust out of the White House broom cupboard, and put it back on show, where it had always been !...They also told me that he was running the country as a business, something that 'Politicians' often fail miserably at achieving...Their words, not mine...but possibly appropriate on this thread ! I am with Liz though...I can sense some ill will creeping into this site...there are plenty of sites on the internet to spout what ever you like about politics, religion, conspiracy theories et al !

Dave, my post on the Covid thread Re Trump was in the link about his Covid ranting Re China & I did comment about the US electorate, so, the fault is with me & not yourself. In term of Covid or politics on the Fool, at this time of lockdown & indeed post lockdown, I reckon it's good for any posters to have a separate section (The Snug) with threads on the likes of Covid as it enables those who want to discuss a subject to have their say; probably a valuable thing during the lockdown. Also, anybody who does not want to read about Covid or Politics/Trump as we go through this crisis, they won't be inclined to visit either thread.

A similar situation to me Tony. My daughter has been in the US for years now. She is married to a consultant who is a partner in the hospital where he works so a relatively well-off family. My Granddaughter is married to an NFL player who plays for the Tennessee Titans, so again, not short of a crust. Universally they are Republicans and 100 percent Trump. I think we are exposed to what our media chooses to tell us, afterall their speciality is bad news ignoring the prosperity Trump brought to millions of Americans. There are winners and losers, that's always been the case but 'it's the economy stupid' that guarantees the majority are better off.

I am sure there is some real benefit from having a business mind in a powerful position at or close to the top but I can't quite visualise our public voting for Alan Sugar or Peter Jones to lead our country. My gripe with Trump is the exceedingly stupid things he has said during Covid ranging from "it's a hoax" to "disinfectant & UV".

There are some anecdotes about Trump, one being that he's not a very good business man and that if he'd invested all the money his father had given him in the bank he'd have ten times the wealth he has now. Also he's the only man in history who owned a casino that went bust!

However we are run by an army of legal eagles who over centuries have tied the population up with gobbledygook designed primarily to guarantee their existence. So really Alan Sugar or Peter Jones might make a welcome change. Now for UV light and disinfectant. Didn't the video clearly show that Trump turned his head to one of the medical attendees at the news conference and said that it could be investigated. That would be like me asking Oppenheimer at Los Alamos 'if a pinch of salt would help the bang'? Press rightly reported the incident but not fully. Made a good headline though.
