There are some anecdotes about Trump, one being that he's not a very good business man and that if he'd invested all the money his father had given him in the bank he'd have ten times the wealth he has now. Also he's the only man in history who owned a casino that went bust! good and bad, sweet and sour, found this which probably is worth a read: www.nytimes.com/2016/06/12/nyregion/donald-trump-atlantic-city.htmlPlenty of sour not much sweet.

I am sure there is some real benefit from having a business mind in a powerful position at or close to the top but I can't quite visualise our public voting for Alan Sugar or Peter Jones to lead our country. My gripe with Trump is the exceedingly stupid things he has said during Covid ranging from "it's a hoax" to "disinfectant & UV". An interesting idea Bill. However we are run by an army of legal eagles who over centuries have tied the population up with gobbledygook designed primarily to guarantee their existence. So really Alan Sugar or Peter Jones might make a welcome change. Now for UV light and disinfectant. Didn't the video clearly show that Trump turned his head to one of the medical attendees at the news conference and said that it could be investigated. That would be like me asking Oppenheimer at Los Alamos 'if a pinch of salt would help the bang'? Press rightly reported the incident but not fully. Made a good headline though. Dave, you are right in what you say where Trump said these could be investigated but what the heck is a world leader doing shooting from the hip at a news conference with such ideas? Just think, he could have suggested that plutonium could be investigated to treat haemorrhoids & had he asked that question in private it would have taken the scientists less than a second to investigate and give him the answer; same with internal UV. Any such idea that he may have should be put to an expert in private, not in a televised briefing where you can see the scientist visibly embarrassed by such a stupid suggestion. In my work, we used to use very strong, in fact dangerously strong, UV to kill a virus & honestly, strong UV is something that needs handling with the greatest of care.

I agree he tends to shoot from the hip without first engaging his brain. Shows he's human, there's good and bad but he certainly isn't boring and sometimes a bit of blue skying thinking can be useful. Strange times.

Hooray! Shock news government meets their own target!! Thing is Steve, it was an aspirational target and it has been achieved in the face of constant sniping from the media and the political point scoring by Her Majesty's Official Opposition. Surely a reserved 'well done' is deserved? No different from GM saying that they wish to produce 1,000 Victor 'F' types a day by the end of 1960, perhaps.

Haven't you been watching the daily briefings Steve? You must have witnessed Peston, Kuenssberg, that dreadful Sky woman et al. offering nothing but criticism and as for Starmer and Ashworth, whining personified.

I do watch the daily press conference and have seen the press and media asking questions which are pertinent. Do you want them to agree with everything the government say, if so you may well like to move to North Korea or Russia. As for Starmer and Ainsworth haven't heard any whining, in fact I've heard very little from them at all. Do you want a gagged press and opposition?

Think we are coming from different universes Steve so best agree to disagree. I assume you probably watch as much TV and read many on-line publications from Mirror to Express as I do. Add this to your list of daily reads as it investigates some very useful facts about biased reporting and certainly many skeletons in various cupboards. I also think it makes a good case that the BBC ignores it's own rules and is not fit for purpose. order-order.com/

The NYTimes article on Trump was interesting. I particularly likes this bit "But even as his companies did poorly, Mr. Trump did well. He put up little of his own money, shifted personal debts to the casinos and collected millions of dollars in salary, bonuses and other payments. The burden of his failures fell on investors and others who had bet on his business acumen." sounds a bit like some football club owners!

Any commentator, political or otherwise, has prejudices. We like them if they accord with ours and object when they do not. It's all part of wanting to be part of the crowd; a very human desire. The chap behind "order-order" is as prejudiced in his way as BBC journalists are in theirs as this from Wiki shows "Paul Delaire Staines (born 11 February 1967) is a British right-wing political blogger who publishes the Guido Fawkes website, which was described by The Daily Telegraph as "one of Britain's leading political blogsites" in 2007. ... In September 2004, Staines began the "Guido Fawkes Blog of plots, rumours and conspiracy". And before you say "order-order" isn't the Guido Fawkes bog it carries the GF logo.

I have family living and working in the U.S.A....They have told me that Trump is the main reason for getting Americans back to work, reviving their country, and bringing our two countries together, he believes in a strong independent U.K...His first act was to get Winston Churchill's bust out of the White House broom cupboard, and put it back on show, where it had always been !...They also told me that he was running the country as a business, something that 'Politicians' often fail miserably at achieving...Their words, not mine...but possibly appropriate on this thread ! I am with Liz though...I can sense some ill will creeping into this site...there are plenty of sites on the internet to spout what ever you like about politics, religion, conspiracy theories et al ! The problem with running a country as a business, is that most businesses are run to make a profit --- at any cost. Businesses - particularly big businesses (such as the oil industry) - tend to think more of profits than what they bring to society or how they use/abuse society.

And if it means bankrupting America to make him - and all the other Americans who are 'not short of a crust' - richer, he will do so.
