So it appears to be the herd immunity principle vs the lockdown principle. Italy have been in lockdown for some time now yet they still have one of the higher mortality rates, although this is mainly because their elders' general health is not as good as some other European countries. The main problems may yet come after they emerge from their lockdown. It will be interesting to see if Italy suffers a second wave of infections.
As Rutland says, the governments are damned no matter what they try to do for the best of their respective countries. It may yet prove that the UK's approach is the best but it will mean a lot of people becoming infected and recovering to build up their immunity. I see Boris being lampooned and castigated by various spokespersons who think they know best but there is no empirical evidence that one method will be better than another because there hasn't previously been such a panic over a variant of flu virus like this to my knowledge.
An analogy that was thrown at me yesterday was that we were encouraged to get chicken pox as a child as it wouldn't be so painful and/or dangerous later in life as the body will become immune to a second dose. Whilst this may not be a perfect analogy, it rams home why it may (only may) be best for those who do not have underlying conditions to contract the virus provided they are not endangering others. Hiding away as Italy and other countries have opted for may prove to be the worst solution.
But only time will tell. At least this virus it may guide future governments' decisions when yet another variant decides to pay a visit.
