I've even recorded the 1979 version of 'The 39 steps', Robert Powell stars, didn't he once play Jesus? I preferred the Hitchcock 1935 version of the 39 Steps staring Robert Donat and a brief appearance from John Laurie (We Doomed, Doomed I say!). I started reading the John Buchan novel once but it bore hardly any resemblance to the film. Some great shots of the Forth Railway Bridge for us train nuts.

Robert Powell did once play Jesus and is said to have become a Christian as a result.

I'm in total agreement with HatterSussex's solution. Properly rewards the most successful. Nobody unfairly punished. Make the FA Cup a mid-week competition and there's the free Saturdays for the Prem's extra games the following season. Re the over-70s policy. If all the young and middle-aged are allowed out they'll all get the virus. They'll all survive it and become immune to future waves. The only group without immunity will be us geriatrics and we'll be even older by the time of the second wave next winter. A soft target that the virus will have to concentrate on. We'll all be goners solving the ageing population problem and pensions crisis at one fell swoop. Government policy? Re testing for the virus. Is everybody mad or is it just me? Getting tested will tell you whether you have the virus or not. If you're found innocent what are you going to do tomorrow? Get tested every day? Bramingham, thereβs now quite a lot of informative discussion/links on line on the rationale of increased testing. Itβs obviously paid huge dividends in countries who have been so far really successful in stemming the tide of infection - the potential of the mobile phone seems remarkable. In the meantime, best wishes to you and your family

Championship clubs want to complete the season www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51934215 but when? Government are stopping non emergency operations from 15 April which suggests they don't expect real pressure on the NHS to start till then. What will follow will be a month or two of widespread illness and possibly further restrictions and, no doubt, some footballers becoming ill so even "behind closed doors" matches will have to be postponed on occasion. It started in China in December and certainly isn't over there so why do our powers that be in football think we'll get it sorted?

Probably on Liz's TV schedule judging by his previous answers.
With regard to the current issues, am I alone in thinking the reactions and responses to COVID-19 are way too knee-jerk?
According to The World Health Organisation figures sent to me by a friend on 15th March (whose brother is a doctor), since January 9th 2020, global deaths by (officially classified) pandemic illnesses/diseases were as follows: TB 314,000 Influenza 130,000 HIV/AIDS 154,000 Malaria 80,000 Covid-19 5,700
Neither of us are sure why COVID-19 has had such massive publicity and why it has rocked the whole world when the other, more serious (if the stats are kosher) pandemic illnesses/diseases are killing far more people ... but there hasn't been any media outcry about these nor any stop the economy directives.
Unfortunately, those that are vulnerable will be vulnerable no matter which strain of virus hits them ... and that comment in now way belittles any of the unfortunate fatalities attributable to COVID-19. Those that have died so far appear have had underlying ailments and they would almost certainly have been just as susceptible if they have contracted 'regular' influenza.
And as for self-isolating! It seems to be a jolly for some judging by the packed car park and queues at tills in Wickes in Bedford on Monday morning! The isolation period is likely to be spent gardening and/or DIYing - oh and mingling with others in DIY stores.
Is it a total over-reaction? Should we be continually in 'Corporal Jones mode' from the moment we wake up to the first zzz at night?

It is a good post, Proud, but Government is damned if it does and damned if it doesn't. The only things we know for sure is that Covid-19 started in China as recently as December 2019 so is a long way away from being over and the death toll will rise and until the majority are tested we won't know the % of the population who will be affected the most.

I've just been listening to a discussion on Radio 4. Those involved were arguing that if Boris (and, presumably, Trump) were giving their press conferences to science correspondants rather than lobby journalists we'd be getting better coverage i.e. less sensational and more informative. They also suggested Dominic Cummings was briefing behind the scenes. They sited the sudden use of the term "herd immunity" as an example. If we all expect the majority of us to get affected, and see this as a good because it provides better immunity to others, then if things go wrong re the Government measures we won't blame the Government!
