As my preferences are rather eclectic it would be easier to make a list of music I'm not keen on rather than a list of which music and musicians I like. Having said that I'm a big fan of American Country and Chicago Blues, Dylan, Ian Dury, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, some ZZTops, Hendrix, Cream, Who, Alexis Korner. John Coltrane, Cannonball Alderly and Miles. Fairport Convention, John Martin, Martin Carthy. African modern jazz. But my favourites would be Blues legends Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Sonnyboy Williamson, Howling Wolf, Son House, John Lee Hooker....etc.

I was reading about Keith Emerson recently, he was friendly with Zappa, they both shared a train of thought where music had no time signature, thinking why should a phrase end just because there's no time on the bar to fit it, or something along those liners, I probably haven't done it justice there. I don't know how far they progressed this idea.

Carmina Burana - O Fortuna!! marvellous, along with the connected Catulli Carmina and Trionfo di Afrodite. Are you familiar with The Flower Duet from Leo Delibés Lakmé? This is a great subject, whoever thought of it, well done.

Soft Machine played The Proms at The Royal Albert Hall in 1970 I think. Robert Wyatt went outside for a "smoke" security wouldn't let him back in:- "I'm playing here tonight" "Get lost son, we only have proper musicians here ..."

My favourite music is the sort with words, punctuation and good grammar but no quavers, brieves, etc etc. Give me Radio 4 any time. MusicHatter says I'm a great disappointment to her.

Great story Greeno, I think at the Marque everyone smoked inside, what they smoked is anyone's guess!

I was a regular at the Marque in the early 60's...sung the odd song now and then, Dudley Moore played some great Jazz on piano, had a few wild nights with Johnny Dankworth, Tubby Hayes and American jazz musician.. Clark Terry...sometimes used to sit with Cleo Lane, a lovely lady. My manager was a guy called Dave Blackman...everyone seemed to know him !...Great memories ! Still working on my 10 for desert island !

Some good stuff there Tassie. I saw Status Quo in Melbourne in 1974 at a big venue near Princess Street station, loudest band I've heard. Then in Launceston Tasmania saw Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee much quieter acoustic blues. Saw a couple of giggs at the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne as well.

You appear to be a real 'teeny bopper' Tass. I was never into pop music type of events. A couple of variety shows I recall were the very first appearance of Shirley Bassey on a London stage at the Adelphi Theatre, London when she was a supporting act to the comedian Al Read also a little earlier in Torquay the man with the golden trumpet, Eddie Calvert. Most of my live musical events have been musicals in the West End or MK and a couple of memorable events at the Albert Hall. The wife however is an avid concert fan and has tickets for the cancelled Barry Manilow concert at the O2 which has been rescheduled for next year. I've lost count of the ones she goes to, from Dire Straits to Neil Diamond and everything in between
