I ordered the 1960 ABC BR Locomotive Combine edited by Ian Allen and am now watching old DVDs, YouTube footage and some DVDs that Lake very kindly sent me. I've already been virtual trainspotting at York, kingsX, Donny Edinburgh and Paddington collecting named locos only.Underling "cops" in my new combine. Call me bonkers but I'm really enjoying myself, today I'm off to Leighton Buzzard on the Skimpot Flyer to get some Jubs,Coronations and Scots! ππ Bet you don't get a jinty, Princess Royal, Ivatt, Fairburn or the odd Clan which had got lost. Wouldn't go to the LMS for Jubilees, every other train through Luton seemed to be one. Did you ever go in the opposite direction on the Bute Street Line? Thinking back, one certainly took one's life in one's hands at Linslade tunnels, think of doing that today, doesn't bear thinking about. probably posted this before: filming and controlling at the same time would probably have tasked Spielberg. Took about 2 years to build from base board to horses, cows and sheep. A retirement project. Great stuff Liz like the sound effects and the turn table. I should have put Pat's instead of Jubs, talking of Clans saw a virtual one at Carlisle the other day, Clan McCleod to be exact. Went to Wheathampstead with a couple of school mates on the Bute Street line, not steam then a DMU empty on the way there and on the way back. That's why it closed I suppose. If you have time pop over to Wheathampstead because some railway fans have made something of the old platform, including a figure of George Bernard Shaw who lived at nearby Ayott St.Lawrence.

Very good Liz, I remember deisel freight trains passing KR when a match was on and them sounding their horns. You can probably remember steam trains passing.

You can probably remember steam trains passing. yes, and on a few especially school holidays where Leighton Buzzard was a regular visit. Also Hitchin by either bus or cycling was regular and in those days was fit enough to get up Offley Hill and as for that little slope from Lilley to Stopsley, used to overtake buses up that. You were allowed on the platform at Hitchin, as long as not too many there, over by the small engine shed on the up-line was a favourite place. Didn't know you were too young for the steam locos from Bute Street

Didn't know you were too young for the steam locos from Bute Street We usually went to LB on the bus.Hitchin went up to what we called the "cliffs".above the then scrapped locos. You could hear an A4 coming from the North with it's shrill whistle, great days. The bus sure did shruggle up to Offley when I get it from Hitchin on match days it makes short work of it now. I remember cycling to LB on only one occasion when about 12 years of age must have been about 25 mile round trip from Luton.I remember steam on the Bute Street line and went with my brother and IKJP on a couple of occasions, but can't remember seeing one on match day go by the ground. Probably in the Oak Road End!!

My first train ride was from Luton to Leagrave with my Grandfather. Whilst waiting for the return train, I clearly remember the station master putting more coal on the fire in the waiting room, making sure we were warm enough ! COYH.

Yes the elusive Scot one I never saw, understandably as how would a 10 year kid manage to get to it's stomping grounds. I remember my dad taking me and my brother to High Wycombe in the early 60s and seeing my first GWR locos. Also we'd go over to Tring station, mum and dad would go in the pub next door and leave me and big bruv on the station trainspotting. Same at Aresley north of Hitchin where trains stopped at the level crossing, now there's road flyover.

Shatter you flatter me, I do remember the winter of 63, but my Leagrave journey was in the early fifties. Winter of 62/63 saw me travelling to work in Hemel Hempstead via the M 1 on a 500 cc single cylinder BSA, now that was cold.COYH.

Plenty of grunt but not a great performance. I had a couple of BSA's, first bike a C10L 250 side valve, flat out at 58 mph but compared with my mates NSU Quickly, like a rocket and then an A10 which was a tad quicker.

Spot on Liz ! My bike had a sidecar frame attached, the only way I could get insurance. Secured a wooden pallet, plus a bag of cement (which solidified quickly) for stability.

Same with cars. When I sold my first house I used some of the money to buy a Vauxhall 2.3 droop snoot Firenza, which in its day was a bit of a rocket. Then latter in life with a promotion my choice of a company car was a 3 litre Vauxhall Carlton which was frightening. Fortunately they swapped it for a 230 Merc after a few months as the wife wouldn't go anywhere near it.

I'm not sure if I'd been on a train beforehand, but my first solo train journey was in the mid/late 50s. I rode my bike to Leagrave station, propped the bike against the wall, and bought a return ticket to Luton for 5d. Went to town, walked round a bit, came back, retrieved my bike and went home.

A wonderful building like the Carnegie Library gone. Isn't hindsight wonderful, you know like not selecting Gordon Turner for the Cup Final
