but feel a bit sad to see Frankie Masonda leave just as NJ comes back there is no doubt that the squad is large and some loanees are still in negotiations re the remainder of this season.
anyone else surprised or not? and what the Heck is going to happen during the summer transfer window - with so many clubs being under the cosh? will we be able to snap up a bargain? or lose more weight in the squad with a view to finances?

The plan is to run with a squad off 22 I think moving forward?
Current squad including the loans and those released was 33. Can't see many additions in the Summer.

I agree that there may well not be many squad additions before the start of next season. However, assuming that NJ wants to revert to the diamond, then we really do need a right wing-back; Cranie & Pearson can't fulfil that role & to be honest even defensive right-back is not the best position for either player. Peter Kioso may come through at RB but failing that, we do need a decent attacking RB. I may well be in a minority, but I would be happy to take James Bree if he is released from Villa; I think he could be developed into a decent player.
On the left flank, we have Dan potts and Brendan Galloway. Maybe after his recovery from knee surgery, Galloway could get back to somewhere near the player he was when he first joined Everton from MK.

Personally I feel we need a right back, left back and defensive midfield player as an absolute minimum. I think that some of the current squad will be released or sold.

pondering the thoughts above and more... we may find someone like Bree being released from Villa due to pandemic pressures on ALL clubs. and I liked his defending against Leeds - plus he can put in a good cross - just wish he was Stacey fast. If NJ keeps us up we might be in a good position to secure one or two players as bargains - (but make very little from letting any of our squad go so cash would remain tight) If we are back in L1, then I can see even less likelihood of signing any new defender even at Bree's level... But my feeling is that we will stay up - why? a) I think we will get the points we need, and b) Birmingham, Wednesday and Charlton may well all get 12 point deductions as well as Wigan. I don't want to see any clubs going out of business but if they have failed in finances, considering what led to -30, then damn straight they should pay a points price this season. (do they have any players we might be interested in? )

Our wages ceiling is far lower than any other Championship Club. In part this is obviously due to teams being relegated from the Premiership but even so the old adage comes to mind "sew your coat according to your cloth". I think all teams need to operate within their means and for the FA and League to actively police that we all do. Coronavirus has hit all clubs of course but financial instability was rife long before lock down.

Did I read somewhere that what the Premiership give the EFL, well over 50% of it are parachute payments. Read the actual features recently but can't remember where, however from wiki:
The Premier League distributes a formulaically derived financial payment to each English Football League (EFL) club every season. There are two mechanisms with which funds are calculated and distributed, these are known as "Parachute Payments" and "Solidarity Payments". The payments are linked to the value of the Premier League’s broadcasting rights. In the 2017-18 season the Premier League paid £243m in Parachute Payments split ast 8 clubs,[1] and £100m in Solidarity Payments split ast the remaining 64 clubs.[2] This compares to £88m of UK TV revenue the EFL distributed to its 72 clubs for the 2017-18 season.[3]

In today's Guardian, there is a news article saying the Premier Leagu is going to charge the promoted Championship teams £8 million next season and 2021/22 to join, "to help soften the blow of lost broadcast revenue because of the Covid-19 crisis".

Heck, that would be tough on Wycombe if they get successive promotions

First professional contract given to Avan Jones a right back joining the U-23's development team. Good to see another youngster coming through.

So much depends on our league status in terms of new contracts/departures/additions - think all sides in the bargaining process will see that as a key factor before agreeing to anything.

I know his Dad well, a staunch Bobbers Club member retired ex Luton bus driver at Arriva. Nice bloke, VERY dry witty sense of humour. Pleased for his lad Avan who has been with our academy since 2009 when he was just 7 years old.
