I was in Australia for one year 89/90 and I took the obligatory trip up the railway to the Blue Mountains (Katoomba?). There was a cafe that I went in that had a menu on a blackboard on one side of the counter. The top item was 'Meat pie and veg'. The second item was 'Two meat pies and veg'. The sense of humour was the most enduring thing I took away with me, apart from my support for the Bunnies who, like the Town, went through some very dark days.

Aussies certainly like meat pies, I recall an advert there in the 70's for Holden cars ( General Motors) that had a jingle that went "We love football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars" so meat pies came second only to football!!

Hope you kept on following them!!! They did come good (with the addition of a trio of English brothers - Sam, Tom and ?? Burgess). Sam considered to be one of the best footballers (league) players to play the game. He is now on the coaching staff due to retirement from injury. They won the grand final in 2014 - Sam had a broken cheek bone in the first tackle of the game and they went on to win, and he played all the game. Won the MoM. great great great player. One downside, he used to like to get stuck in a bit too hard, and suffered many suspensions

That was predominantly a Victorian song -- From memory it was an advert for the Victorian Football League ---- Football --- Aussie Rules Meat pies ---- 4 and 20 was the main brand, they were created in Bendigo, Victoria Kangaroos ---- well they are just Australian Holden Cars ---- had a lot of plants in Victoria. If you really want to relive it ---

I have visited Australia 10 times over a period from 1979 - 2014...Have several videos of our adventures and hundreds of photo's...great memories !...The pastime I loved most, was driving for mile after mile on roads with hardly another car in sight...Some great scenery in the Rain Forests of Queensland, Frazer Island, loved the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Goffs Harbour, Sydney...enjoyed the R.S.L. Clubs, actually rounded sheep up on horseback out in Mungalala in the Outback !!...But never wanted to go and live there, I couldn't live anywhere else than the UK !...I have a 89 year old brother in law, who wants me to go out one more time, so as we can do one more big drive out to where ever our fancy takes us !...Love the rivalry !

For those who may not appreciate it, the meat pie (at quarter time, half time and three quarter time) is the equivalent of the balti at half time at the kenny. There are variations, but the main variety is 'pie and sauce' -- which is tomato sauce. Either poured on top, or stick the nozzle of the bottle under the pastry and squirt it inside. In South Australia, you can have a 'floater'. To the rest of Australia this is an abomination, but in SA it is considered great. All it is, however is a plate with mushy peas (sometimes in the lesser quality places it more resembles pea soup, but is definitely supposed to be mushy peas), with a meat pie on top, Tomato sauce is an option with this one, as some cannot quite come at tomatoes sauce on peas!!!!!

I remember the four and twenty pies bought them at the MCG while watching Aussie Rules or Sheffield Sheild and Test cricket. We lived in Adelaide for a while and their speciality food was a "pie floater" a meat pie flouting in pea soup. Aussie cuisine has come along way since then!

Liked the RSL clubs too Sussex, went on a camping trip up to Darwin in the 70's and visited Alice Springs RSL club great food served, played carpet bowls and really friendly locals. For those who don't know RSLclubs are a bit like our British Legion clubs. RSL stands for Returned Services League and supports those who have served or who are serving in the armed services.

Actually Mel, the Bunnies signed four Burgess Brothers, Sam, George, Tom and Luke and they did all play together at least once though that may have been just for show. Luke is the eldest and struggled to make the team while Tom was the youngest and wasn't quite ready but is now the only remaining one in the team. Their mother went out there too and she looked like their sister. Luke returned to the UK years ago while George came back for last season, Wigan I think. Three of the Bunnies greats are now on the coaching staff, Sam, John Sutton and GI but I think they've been stood down because of the virus. I always support the teams from where I lived which in this case was Chifley in South Sydney and I used to go to Matraville RSL. After a bit of trial and error I settled on Tooheys Old as my black gold. Apart from the bottom feeders, as the Bunnies and the Hatters have been, my ten years in LA also allowed me to call the Showtime Lakers and the Blue Wrecking Crew LA Dodgers as my teams so I've had quite a lot of ups too. None of the above, however, can raise the emotions as the Town can, from the ritual bashings of Sunderland in the fifties, Rioch's left foot and French's goal in the sixties, the Arsenal at Wembley and the miraculous escapes from late season danger. I'll let them all lose if the Town can get a draw in exchange.
