In an unguarded moment early in the season, I agreed to LakeCounty’s proposal that I take on the running of this season’s Bobberman Cup competition. It’s a tough gig to emulate last season’s cup supremo, Wimbo, not to mention the legendary HatterSussex who ran the competition for so many years, but here goes…
Schedule
This season’s Spike Bobberman Cup will begin at the same time as the Hatters enter the FA Cup against Wycombe on the weekend of November 10th. All Bobberman predictors will be in the competition at this stage, and the Wycombe game and the following Tuesday’s Checkatrade game at Peterborough will form the basis for a qualifying round mini-league to sort out the top 64 to form the first round proper.
From then on, players will be drawn against each other in a normal knockout cup format. As far as possible, round dates will follow the dates of the FA Cup, so for as long as LTFC are in it, their cup games will also be the Bobberman Cup games. Once the Hatters have exited the FA Cup, we will use our scheduled league game on that date. If we have the misfortune to go out in the first round, with no scheduled game on 2nd round day, or if, once we’re out, we’re due to play an opponent still in, I’ll find a suitable alternative on a nearby date.
So, with those provisos, the provisional Spike Bobberman Cup round dates will be:
Qualifying Round (2 legs) – all players - 10th Nov (Wycombe) and 13th Nov (Peterborough)
Round 1 - 64 players - 1st Dec (FACup 2 or ??)
Round 2 - 32 players - 5th Jan (FAC3 or Portsmouth)
Round 3 - 16 players - 26th Jan (FAC4 or Southend)
Round 4 - 8 players - 16th Feb (FAC5 or Fleetwood)
Round 5 - 4 players - 16th March (FAC QF or Gillingham)
Final - 2 players - 6th April (FAC SF or Blackpool)
How to predict
I’ll post an announcement on the Sunday one week before a cup round and invite players to predict on that cup thread. Predictions should consist of:
- Your score prediction for the game
- Your score prediction for half-time
- Your Scorers (3 in number, chosen from either team, with 1 reserve scorer in brackets to be used in the event that one of your first 3 is neither the starting XI nor named as a substitute)
- Your prediction for the attendance for that game.
As with the Bobberman League, the cut-off for recording your predictions will be one hour before the kick-off time.
If you should somehow miss the chance to post your score for the Cup on the Cup thread, then I will attempt to use your routine Bobberman League prediction instead but of course you then won’t benefit from the potential extra points available for the HT score and attendance estimate if a penalty shoot-out is required.
Scoring
The scoring system will be similar to previous years:
Correct score: 5 points
Correct result: 3 points (note: if you get the correct result then you get the 5 points and NOT 5+3 points).
Correct score at half time: 2 points
Correct result at half time: 1 point
A correct scorer: 1 point for each goal scored by a player i.e. if you name Jorge Grant as a scorer and he scores twice, you get 2 points.
There are no replays: in the event of each player scoring equal points, the tie goes directly to a penalty shootout, with the winner being the player whose attendance prediction is closest to the published attendance for that game.
Feel free to post any questions below, but please note: this is the introduction and rules thread and NOT for predictions. I’ll post a predictions thread for the qualifying round in about a week’s time.
Cheers, everyone.
