The 2023-24 season Bobberman Champions League kicks off in a couple of weeks, so here’s an introductory post to whet your appetite and to fill the participants (you all know who you are!) in on the details. I’m looking after the CL this season as Lake has qualified and can enjoy participating without trying to run the competition as well!
Participants and rules
The Champions League is contested by the top 5 finishers in each league from last season, plus the Bobberman Cup winner. They will compete in 4 groups of 4 over 3 matches for the right to take part in the knockout stages. The 3 league champions and the Cup winner will be seeded and kept apart in the draw – one in each group, and the others will be drawn at random to fill the remaining group slots. The draw will take place at some point next week – watch this space!
The top two from each group will qualify for the quarter finals as follows:
Winner Group A vs runner up Group D.
Winner Group B vs runner up Group C
Winner Group C vs runner up Group A
Winner Group D vs runner up Group B
Then the semi-finals will be:
QF1 winner v QF2 winner
QF3 winner v QF 4 winner
Predictions should consist of
- Your score prediction for the game
- Your score prediction for half-time
- Your scorers (3 in number, chosen from either team, with 1 reserve scorer in brackets to be used only in the event that one of your first 3 is neither in the starting XI nor named as a substitute)
For the final group game and all the knockout stages, you should also include your attendance prediction to be used as a penalty shoot-out if needed.
Scoring
Correct score: 5 points
Correct result: 3 points
Correct score at HT: 2 points
Correct result at HT: 1 point
A correct scorer: 1 point for each goal scored by a named player
If level on points, ties in the final table of the group stage will be decided by whoever has the most full time correct scores, followed by most half time correct scores followed by most full time then half time correct results. If still equal at this point, the attendance prediction for the final group game will act as the ultimate decider.
There are no replays in the knockout phases so in the event of each player scoring equal points, the tie goes directly to a penalty shootout, with the winner being the player whose attendance prediction is closest to the published attendance for that game.
Round dates
Group game 1 - 15th January (or whenever!) (Burnley A)
Group game 2 - 3rd February (Newcastle A)
Group game 3 - 18th February (Man Utd H)
Quarter-finals - 6th April (Bournemouth H)
Semi–finals - 27th April (Wolves A)
Final - 11th May (West Ham A)
If there are any questions, please do post them below. However this is the preview and rules thread for everybody's reference. I’ll open another thread for predictions once the draw for the group stage has been made.
Thanks all, and good luck to all the participants!
