The provisional results for the qualifying round of the Spike Bobberman Cup are in the image at the bottom of this post - click on the image to see the whole thing.
The aim of the qualifying round is to reduce the field to the 64 participants needed for the 1st round. In fact, although there are more than 64 predictors in the 3 Bobberman Leagues, not all of them can have read my and Lake’s frequent reminders to predict in the Cup(!) and there were fewer than 64 Cup predictions by some margin. So this is how I have decided to proceed:
- everyone who made a Cup prediction has gone through, even those who scored 0. If you predicted only 1 game on the Cup thread, I added any points for your League prediction for the other game.
- the top 4 scorers (who actually made a Cup prediction) will have a bye to the 2nd round- congratulations to Make Emile of It, Musichatter, Bloodorange and Clappers who are the lucky ones.
- then I sought out some wildcard entries from those predictors who posted only in the League. I won’t single them out by listing them, but they were a mixture of those who scored well in the 2 games and those with a good previous history of Cup participation. So even if you think you missed out, it’s worth checking the list below to see if you will be in the 1st round draw.
If there’s anyone who feels particularly aggrieved by my decision-making, please do get in touch with me by the deadline below.
These were a really low-scoring pair of games - in general, people were too pessimistic about Liverpool and too optimistic about Man Utd! Make Emile of It was top scorer with 9, thanks to getting both half-time scores spot-on and also being the only person to predict Man Utd to win 1-0. Unsurprisingly, no-one predicted the scorer in the Man Utd game. A few people got a point for Diaz, which was a gamble that paid off considering how doubtful he was to be in the squad at all. And only 1 person had Chong to score, so congrats to MKhat for that bit of foresight.
Any queries on the scores or anything else should be submitted to me by PM by the Sunday 19/11/23 at the latest to enable me to confirm the results and make the draw for the next round. This will be played on our Premier League game away at Brentford on Saturday 2nd December. The draw and predictions thread will be posted in about 10 days’ time.
