After our moral boosting victory.at Goodison on Saturday we play Burnley in the rearranged fixture. They are struggling (like us) to come to terms with the step up to the top flight, hopefully they will struggle for at least one more game. COYH! No trivia from me this time, if anyone has some nuggets the floor is yours.

Alan West a top class player, wish we had him now, although he is the clubs pastor.

Alan West a top class player, wish we had him now, although he is the clubs pastor. He was in Luton Library last home game with the writer of books called "They Played for David Pleat."

Looking fwd to my first home league game this season after an eventful bike ride here involving a) a lot of mud and b) a hedge. V much hope Burnley won’t come good tonight but they have some great players and a great manager who will keep us very gainfully occupied. Enjoy the game whether you are going or watching from afar COYH!

Home for 10.30, too early for bed so:
A travesty, we deserved at least a point and possibly more. Many goalmouth scrambles and several excellent headers but we were undone, for a second time this season, by a misjudgement and lack of pace from Captain Tom.
Wasn't sure who scored our equalizer, bit of a melee, the TV watchers would have seen more. And then a goal worthy of winning any game, sod it. Sitting here frashscores tells me it was Adebayo, I think from his cameo he should start in front of Brown whose contribution was minimal.
Our players worthy of mention, Ogbene yet again, Chong for his brief appearance, Burke when replacing Bell and for me the undoubted Man of the Match was Mengi. I think we have struck gold there.

All on Lockyer for the first goal then?

All on Lockyer for the first goal then? You made me check the Sky highlights there shady in case I had missed something when lamenting the goal. Yes down to Lockyer, firstly with a miss kick/touch and then too slow to do much other than foul which would have probably been a red card. A classic defence to attack move by Burnley and we did not have any cover.

Thanks for this 8two, some idiotic comments from many of the Facebook crowd! "Two steps back", "We can't defend" and worse! I only heard snippets (Usual Simon Pitts commentary wouldn't work for me last night!)
Saw the brief highlights and those backed you points. We ARE still improving and will punch well above our weight several times this season methinks...starting this Saturday??!!!

For some, last night's game looked like it was forced upon them when they should have been resting. Lockyer may be regarded as a talisman but wheeling him out when he was clearly wounded from the weekend didn't help Tom (or the other troops). Unfortunately for Lockyer he looked slightly off the pace (both mentally and physically) and it showed when facing physical challenges.
That said, our MF didn't afford our defence any protective shield so they were very exposed to attacks through the middle as well as down our right flank. Given that Mengi was debuting, I thought RE would set the team up with a much more defensive MF to protect him (more so than Lockyer or Bell) but we seemed to either follow the ball all over the park one minute or follow opposition players the next - in so doing, we lost our shape in MF and left huge spaces just in front of our CBs. The most annoying thing for me was that it was third time that they played simple, non-threatening passes to the centre circle but found someone (usually Berg) with no Luton players within 10 yards! That should have been corrected after the first time it happened, let alone second - to allow it three times was just ill disciplined and showed lack of application.
One player who looks like he could do with a rest is Kabore - not because of injury but because he is struggling! Burnley quite clearly targeted him and our right flank for their attacks and Kabore's struggles meant that Brown and Mengi had to help out far more than should be necessary. With Brown being brought back to help out, it meant one outlet was negated and our right sided attacking blunted. Mengi was pulled over to the right to cover Kabore and that left larger gaps between him and Lockyer ... again, two sitting DMFs would have helped plug that gap.
Given how much better we looked with Ogbene at RB, I think it merely highlighted Kabore's poor performance and shortcomings. Much that I wouldn't want to sacrifice Ogbene's attacking prowess, I'd rather keep a clean sheet so we don't have to score at least two goals to win!
The other strange decision, IMO, was to put Burke on in place of Bell. I understood that Andersen had played LCB for Barnsley so that would have made more sense to me than Burke defending with his weaker foot ... not that he made a bad job of it but the adage "play to your strengths" sprung to mind. Some of the positions they were asked to play last night struck me as a tad strange.
Conversely, seeing where our defensive weaknesses lie may see necessitate another round of musical chairs vs Spurs. We must upgrade our RB defending in particular and, given that Burke has played RB, Ogbene has played RWB, Doughty has played LB and LWB and Mengi is supposed to have played a DMF role in the past, it may not be minor surgery.
Positives? Although it is the first time that we haven't improved overall, our second half display warranted a point at least. Just a shame that we expended so much energy by changing our tactics and, more importantly, the personnel to chase the equaliser that we didn't have players with the right defensive mindset on the pitch to see out the game. Yes, it was a wonder strike but the ball into Berg (unchallenged yet again in the middle of the pitch) was far, far too easy and we never regained our shape once the ball got to him.

With only 4 of our 18 shots on target I think more of the blame for not getting even a draw lies with the front men.

Burnley are an excellent side, we played well but couldn’t finish, they played well and could, assisted by the fact they spent £100m pre season. Almost every team we play this year will outpace us, outskill us and will have outspent us. Agree that we are doing great and will spring the odd result as a consequence. Bring on the Spuds! And COYH!
