Second game of the season tomorrow evening when we face the Pensioners (wish they were in their 60s!) at Stamford Bridge. Pochettino is looking for his teams first win as manager, sure it will come but hopefully not tomorrow. Let's hope our lads have learned a thing or two following our Brighton defeat and get at least a point, and as people are saying the pressure is on Chelsea not us. COYH! Blues Trivia. Gus Mears acquired Stamford Bridge athletics stadium in 1904, he wanted to lease the ground to Fulham FC. They declined so he formed his own club Chelsea FC founded in 1905, they've played there ever since.

Not trivia but their greatest ever player. Who else but: With 132 goals in 169 games for Chelsea, Jimmy Greaves will probably never be surpassed as the most prolific goalscorer the club has ever seen. Greaves was signed as a junior in 1956 and the following year created a club record by scoring 114 goals in the youth team.
Head to head Luton vs Chelsea: Games won: 14 Games lost: 19 Games drawn: 12 First game: 1927 FA Cup, Chelsea win 4 - 0 Last game: 2022 FA Cup, Chelsea win 3 - 2 Biggest Luton win: 4 - 0, 1972, Division 2 Biggest Luton loss: 4 - 0, 1927, 1957

I saw him at White Hart Lane in the "double"team a few times a brilliant player.

Oh well, there were bright spots but an expected result. For me Kaminski had a fair game and no hope with the goals, Kabore partnered Chong well and looks promising for future games against lesser opposition. Good to see Burke back and let's hope he's available again this side of Christmas.
Let's hope our season starts against West Ham.

I guess as expected, all the three promoted clubs from the championship are, even after extensive recruitment, going to find the going very tough in the premier for at least the first dozen games. In addition to our two games, I have watched both Sheffield United and Burnley in a game this season and the gulf between being a top championship side and a capable premier side is massive.
In our earlier days in the then first division, the David Pleat days, we had or recruited the talent of Paul Walsh, Brian Stein, Ricky Hill, Brian Horton, Steve Foster, Mick Harford, David Preece and others and found the going tough but managed to survive. These days with premier clubs being the rich boy play toys of bored overseas billionaires & the TV money, the going is even tougher and unlike in our previous visit, the premiership is heavily populated with overseas talent & the very best UK players. Could we pay a player £325k a week as two-goal Chelsea man Raheem Sterling is reported to be on? Superb player but that is the crazy world of football finance.
Will we survive in the Premier? Well, maybe that is not as important as maintaining a financially stable club that is owned by true Luton supporters with the interests of the club as their priority. If we survive, then that’s great. If we don’t then we can be optimistic that our club custodians have built a club that should have a good chance of being another Norwich/Watford type yo-yo club but under far better management.
Hopefully, as we get to around the 12-game mark, our players will become more accustomed to the needs of the premier league and we can build toward that magical 39-40 points that should keep us in the premier. If not, then let's look forward to being a sustainable well-managed yo-yo club.

(Only two points for a win then). Into the New Year we picked up some points and then finished strongly towards the end of the season. We were still relegated but only narrowly, a case of improvement and getting used to the challenges of the top flight. As you say though the Premier League is so much more superior than the "Old Division One" of the past.

Interesting: estimated £9.5m spent by our club; not sure how Sky would have the details but anyway:

Wimbo, I reckon they must have looked out of their office window and jumbled up the numbers of the first three buses that passed by!
If rumours are to be believed (I'll believe anything!) then we have paid quite a bit more than that for Kaminski (£2.5m), Giles (£5m), Chong (£4m), Brown (£2m), Andersen (2.5m) and Nakamba (£3.5m) ... £19.5m plus at least one loan fee for Kabore.
I feel that we have been incredibly unfortunate to gain promotion in the summer that the transfer went utterly crazy! The Saudi League financial pressure plus desperation of some PL clubs owners meaning that bang average PL quality players are now £30+ million whereas they may have been £10m-£15m last summer. The demand by West Ham for a minimum £100m for Declan Rice was the catalyst and by achieving that figure, every other transfer has leapt.
Caciedo and Lavia both had just one season each in the PL yet cost Chelsea their full TV revenue for the season. Mind you, to really ram home some perspective, I read that Chelsea were about to sign a shirt sponsorship deal worth £40m per season!
I will be amazed if we somehow scrape survival from this season but my main fear is whether the new players have similar relegation terms in their contracts that will allow them to leave the club ... as has happened with so many of the better players at Leeds.
Many of the scrappers and battlers who got us here have, IMO, been dealt 'bad' hands - not financially, I'm sure, but in terms of their careers and desire to play in the PL. It was only ever going to happen for them with Luton as no other teams at the elite level would throw the merest glance in their direction.
