The Development squad's pre-season's fixtures are here, also the under-18's www.lutontown.co.uk/news/2023/june/academy-pre-season/ . From that, it looks like Hitchin is a development squad fixture this season (Saturday 8th July), unless we're going to go twice! There's also a trip to Welling in there for old time's sake . Chesham United announced a while back that they're playing us on 25th July and as they don't feature on the list I guess that's going to be the 1st team...

Thank goodness we are not wasting first team squad fixtures against the likes of these - loyalty/recent convention has a value but the situation, now, is more important than that. Club seem, again, to have made a most appropriate decision- whilst first team can upgrade their workouts.

Hitchin obviously will play their first XI against the development squad so unfortunately I guess it is unlikely that we can enjoy the traditional pleasant summer evening mid-week game. Shame, think Luton fans thoroughly enjoyed the fixture and it is a welcome boost to Hitchin's coffers.

The first team are playing Ipswich that evening. At Colchester. www.lutontown.co.uk/news/2023/july/pre-season-fixtures/I'm so confused now I'm going to have to go and get the bins in...

If the Ipswich game had been at Portman Road I'd have gone from Norwich on the train, but Colchester in the evening and the position of their ground will have to think about it?

Humidity and ice-cream at HitchinIt's always good to spend a summer afternoon or evening at Top Field catching up with Hatters you've not seen over the close season. Lots to discuss this time - Wembley experiences to share, the Kenny redevelopment to puzzle over and Pelly's new contract to wonder about. It might have been the development squad playing but plenty of Hatters had made their way over to watch. The ice-cream van was doing a roaring trade. Oh, and there was some entertaining football as a backdrop. Our under-21s are decent and it was a fairly evenly matched game. Luton probably had slightly the better of the first half and were 1-0 up at the break, but Hitchin were stronger in the second and (after sheltering in the stand until half-time to keep out of the rain) I went to stand on the terrace at the far end as we were kicking that way, only for the majority of the action to take place in our half. I can't tell you anything about the Hitchin goal as it came immediately after half-time and I wasn't actually looking . I'm not sure Shatter can tell you anything about the late Luton winner, as he'd sidled off by that point, but it was a well worked goal scored right in front of me and finally vindicated the decision to stand there. 1-1 would probably have been a fair result but I was chatting to a main-stand regular who lives in Hitchin and he was extremely pleased to have the bragging rights even if it was a friendly.

Thanks Dawn, I missed the winner just as I walked out of the ground! As you say Hitchin had much of the second half the ball rarely coming up the open terrace end. Always a pleasure to be at this friendly, and as often as not thunderstorms were about. A crowd of just over 1,000 was a bit less than usual but considering no first teamers present and a poor weather forecast a pretty good turnout. I had the pleasure of meeting Big Mick who looks in great shape and allowed me a photo with him. Where will the team be at next seasons Hitchin friendly, back in the Championship or still in the Premier time will tell.
