As the fourth went in on Sunday, I was reminded 'You've got to watch this lot train on Tuesday'. But as the one picked out of the hat, it's only right that that I should attend, and my brother was still up for it so off we went.
Proceedings started in a full Eric Morecambe suite with the chap from Muscle Squad detailing what they're all about. My idea of fitness involves a walk over the downs, so much of this went over my head. But the images of how they have kitted out our training ground were interesting. Looks like a great environment to go about your work.
Jared Roberts-Smith was up next. He said he only had ten minutes before going to training, but spent at least twenty with us. He explained how a new fitness centre was being constructed at the training ground with three fitness stations 'each the size of this room', where all age groups could work at the same time, replacing the current 'windowless dungeon'. JR-S then detailed a typical week's training routine. With games only Saturday/Saturday, today(tuesday) would be intense training after Sunday off and light training on Monday. But this week, having, ahem, 'played' on Sunday, the intense session will be on the Wednesday. Later in the week there is more light training and tactical work before Saturday's match. If there is a midweek game, this would effectively replace the intense training day.
After some lovely breakfast rolls and pastries, and some free resistance bands courtesy of Muscle Squad, it was time to keep off the hallowed turf and take our places in the dugouts for the training session. Good to see plenty in the enclosure too. Training began with a warm up, after which the players split into four groups: the injured, the keepers, those who barely featured at w*****d, and those who featured even less at w*****d. The latter two groups performed drills similar to the standard pre-match stuff with NJ taking a watching brief. Jonesy then took charge as the two groups merged. Each 'team' would then, in turn, move/pass/receive and move up the pitch as Jones would gradually instruct them to add a pass in midfield, then a pass behind the full back, and finally a shot at the keeper. The 'opponents' would keep their positions, Jones insisting this was 'no contact, minimal risk'. Then came the closest to a game we saw. An enjoyable 7 or 8 a-side played on half the pitch which just about completed the day's training.
As this went on, the injured players came over for photos, autographs and a chat. Good to see Shea and Rea in good spirits, and also to hear that today was the first time they were able/allowed to run outside on grass. We had a decent chat with Rea, a good lad who agreed what a sanitised lot those prawn sandwich munching 'orns have became.
We called it a day at this point. As the fools representative, apologies for not getting a chat with Osho, but I've never been one for players autographs etc. Also, Gabe is still on the naughty step in my eyes. I was a bit concerned my bruv might have felt a bit dragged into it after Sunday's events. But he enjoyed the time (over three hours) at the Kenny, as did I. If you have the spare time next time, I'd recommend putting your name in the hat. Many thanks to SW19 for the general good work and for the arrangements for ourselves today.
Cheers,
COYH.
