Tomorrow we host Newport County in the EFL Cup. After two draws in the League this could be a chance for our forwards to get their shooting boots on. COYH!! Newport Trivia. They have four nicknames. The Exiles, The Ironsides, The Port and The County.

I remember-5deg and freezing fog on the M4 home from Newport once. Night game, conference days, think they put 5 past us.
Makes the good times more enjoyable.

Well a very disappointing night. Macey-Poor handling for 3rd goal, positioning suspect for 2md but left exposed. Burke won every defensive duel.Lockyer full of commitment, distribution poor but took his goal exceptionally well.Lansbury revelled in the space at the back spraying passes left and right but went missing on 1st goal.Pereira some great flashes going forward but nuwhere good enough defender to play wingback.CMG looked good at wingback, scored an absolute belter until kicked out of the game and was down when they broke for their 1st goal ref never protected him at all.Watson had a good first half worked hard. Woodrow had a shocker definitely not a midfielder.Berry had a poor game as well never got into it.Jerome looked rusty touch was not there. Muskwe tried hard and early showed promise when running at their defence but his decision making is suspect.Morris tried hard but lacked service. Thorpe put some great crosses in but shot when a square ball to Morris was a tap in. Cornick never really got into the game and Osho looked solid when he came on. Jones just seem to put a team out for minutes with no structure.

Bang on assessment bernardshakey
Aside from a worldie opening goal, Luton Reserves got what the team Nathan Jones (along with so many modern Managers at this level now sadly) put out. TOTAL disrespect for cup competitions.
Newport deserved their win because they WANTED it more than our second string. Last night was evidence that IMHO the League Cup should now either be scrapped, or included in the Season Ticket price. Why should I fork out money again to see a Reserve side?
That was the first time in 8 Kenilworth Road visits I've seen us lose at home to Newport.
My 598th LTFC defeat and on last night's showing if a Luton side repeat that 'effort' it will not be long before I see my 600th Town loss.

Excellent review Bernard, exactly how I saw the game, I would add a little bit more to your “Woodrow” comment, I thought he was worse than poor, he looked and played like he just didn’t want to be out there.
And Loyal, spot on too, if Nathan is going to disrespect the cup games (I appreciate everyone needs a run out), then these games should be part of the ST package.

Thanks Bernard for your evaluation of the match and player performances. I woke this morning to hear on Radio Norfolk NJ slagging off a player who he said had had the worst game of his career. Would this have been Woodrow,Berry,Macey? Any suggestions?

My take on last night: The positives : I thought Lansbury played the sweeper role quite well. Midfield was pretty decent, Watson was excellent, and Thorpe did well when he came on. Burke was solid, Gomes and Pereira tried hard in unfamiliar positions. Pereira never stopped trying. I can give Berry a pass as he is recovering fitness.
The negatives : We are clearly short on defenders, particularly central defenders. After Lockyer’s performance (he was way way below the level required) I think we need not one but two new central defenders. I barely noticed Woodrow throughout, I am starting to fear he is a massive waste of money. He was allegedly playing the number 10 role, but I thought that meant supporting the front two? He was always 30 yards behind them. Cornick, coming on for the last 30, was awful. Jerome looked like a League Two striker. I like the look of Morris, but he needs to be fed the ball in the right positions. If we carry on as we are, we risk him getting hugely frustrated, and I think his head will drop. I don’t think Muskwe got in the box all game (and I can only recall Woodrow getting in the box once). I would have preferred Muskwe to have gone to Grimsby, and given the Canadian lad a chance. I think Muskwe has had plenty of chances now.
Finally, credit to Newport who looked like a very good League 2 side that could hold their own in League One. I’m off to put a tenner on them for promotion.
