I had the pleasure of watching Luton as a schoolboy from 1955 and they had a really good side in that period. However after the Cup Final loss in 1959 the team began to slide and at the end of the 59/60 season were relegated to Div. 2. A number of former stars still remained but most were approaching the Autumn of their careers. I went to an evening match versus Stoke on Thursday 23 Feb. Although Stoke were below Luton they had just appointed Tony Waddington as manager and were beginning to improve. Luton finished 13th that season, but at that time form was inconsistent and pretty uninspiring. That night Irish International, George Cummins in his last season at Luton decided to turn it on, he completely ran the match, beating players with ease and spraying passes about with great aplomb, a truly virtuoso performance. Stoke did not have an answer and the rest of the side responded and we won 4-1. I have seen many memorable by Luton since that time and great moments, most of which have been mentioned. Yet amazingly this match which has been forgotten by most sticks vividly in the memory, due to a magnificent 90 min performance by the type of player we do not see these days, a true "schemer and ball player".

Yes Bob George Cummins was a very gifted player. Do you recall that when on a dribble he used to, with his arms low, point either left or right to confuse the defender and leave him clueless on which way he was going. Yes 4 - 1, Luton's greatest ever goalscorer, Gordon Turner, with all 4, one of which was a penalty. A crowd of just over 12,000 in attendance.

Raddy Antics goal against City to keep us in the First Division. 1986. Plus Pleats strange celebration at Full Time! 1983 shatter mate. I was one of the 5,000 Hatters at Maine Road. RIP Raddy

It was the 2-0 Shatter. Another memory was losing 2-0 at home to Orient when Brian Lewis (RIP) came on as sub and won (?) at least one pen and scored the winner in a 3-2 win, crowd were going mental. My late Dad and I were two of the 13,751 at Kenilworth Road on that Aug 23rd day in 1969 when we came back from 0-2 down with only 17 mins remaining, by scoring 3 goals in 12 mins. Brian Lewis RIP came on as sub for Laurie Sheffield, but he didn't score bernardshakey. John Collins, Graham French with an exquisite lob and Malcolm Macdonald scored our goals. There is Anglia TV footage highlights of the game on You Tube.

Hi Dave, I am glad you remembered that Gordon Turner scored all four. I remember that he scored but was not sure if it was all 4. Although a touch inconsistent, when George Cummins was on form he was virtually untouchable. He laid on many for Gordon Turner, a very accurate passer of the "Through Ball". Always enjoyed the start of the season when the pair of them would rip Sunderland apart.

Not me remembering Bob, looked it up on the LTFC bible by Roger Wash and Simon, all Luton results and pictures from the Stone Age onwards. And yes to Sunderland, the programme front page of Luton 8 -2 Sunderland I use as my avatar on facebook:

I had a magic moment today. I got a call from the club asking if I was OK, did I need any shopping or just a chat? They are calling all their season ticket holders who are serious wrinklies like me! What a great thing to do. Thanks 2020. You have gone up further in my estimation if that were possible!

A game and a performance I remember well was during the great cup run of 1973. The game Luton away at Newcastle and the performance the two goals from John Aston which got us to the next round. I traveled up with my dad on the Luton supporters train and remember well my first veiw of Newcastle from the carriage window as we passed over the river Tyne. Aston from memory scored both goals in front of the Gallowgate End which silenced the home fans. At the end of the game a group of their "supporters" managed to get into the Luton stand chanting "you're going to get your effing heads kicked in" luckily the local plod dispersed them. But it was a rather scary walk back to the station. Great day out all the same, unfortunately we were knocked out at Roker Park in the 6th round to eventual winners Sunderland,Who we're managed by the great Bob Stokoe.
